i am getting po171 and p1405 check engine. codes i looked up what they mean but can any direct me in what might be a common problem with these contours causing these codes. The car will sputter on take off if you push down on gas hard but if you barely push its ok.

It sounds like a fuel pressure check would be in order for your 1996 Ford Contour. Po171 is a "lean" fuel code and that would also account for the lack of power. The code p1405 is related to the EGR system and could be caused by a faulty differential pressure sensor or restricted sensor hose.

FOR THE PO171 LEAN CONDITION CHECK FOR A VACUMN LEAK HOSES OR INTAKE MANIFOLD ALSO HOW LONG AGO DID YOU CHANGE FUEL FILTER COULD BE RESTRICTING FUEL FLOW CAUSING LEAN CONDITION? FOR THE P1405 CHECK EGR HOSES AND EGR WORKING WATCHING MANDREL MOVE WHILE THROTTLE MOVEMENT COULD BE PLUGGED INTAKE PASSAGE REMOVE EGR AND CLEAN THOROUGHLY?
