CHECK ENGINE on 2000 Suzuki Esteem

When I put on the engine the "CHECK ENGIGE" sign appears on the pannel and remains even when the car is moving. What should I do?

The Check Engine light should come on when the ignition is turned on but extinguish when the engine starts and runs.
