There are service fittings on the refrigerant lines or there may be one on the compressor itself. I'm not sure what you mean by "the air conditioner will not charge," but if you mean that you can't get refrigerant into the system, you need to recheck your procedure and check that you have the right fittings on your gauge hoses for the service ports.
