1994 Geo Prizm Question: Change timing belt

Question

Visitor, 1.8L 4 Cylinder, Ankeny, IA, November 16, 2010, 22:57

I have a toothless timing belt on my Prizm. I got a new one and I was wondering how to replace the old one? I know a good bit about engines but this is one thing I have never dealt with. Anything would be helpful. Thanks!

This is an interference engine. If the engine lost timing due to timing belt failure, there is a big possibility for valve damage. In this case the cylinder head has to come off and valves replaced / inspected.

Toyota hasn't made an "interference" motor in years- the 4A-FE definitely isn't. -Here's a link to Autozone's Vehicle Repair Guide for a '93 (My car is a '94 Prizm with the 1.6 as well, and that's what I have listed, and what it's supposed to be referencing... Don't know why it's not pulling up the right year, but should be the same DOHC from '93 to '94 ) Have fun and Good Luck!
