A guide to problems, costs, maintenance and repair for your 1998 Volvo C70

1998 Volvo C70 Problems

Convertible Tops May Have Problems With Micro-Switches/Potentiometers

The convertible top may have problems with the micro-switches and potentiometers that help control the raising and lowering of the top.

ABS Light Due to ABS Control Module Failure

The anti-lock brake system (ABS) Control Unit has a high failure rate. When this fault occurs, the ABS light will illuminate and codes may be stored indicating a problem with the ABS Pump Motor, or Wheel Speed Sensors, but the problem is the ABS Control Module.

Other symptoms may include an illuminated Check Engine and transmission shift light. and the speedometer may stop working as well.

Note: The brake system will operate normally however during a panic stop the Anti Lock Brakes will not work and the wheels may lock-up, causing a lack of vehicle control under these situations.

Check engine light is on due to secondary air injection system

If the check engine light is on and diagnostic trouble codes point to the air pump system, then the entire system needs to be checked.

There are a few issues that arise from the vacuum lines becoming plugged or disconnected but the most common issue is the air pump itself fails. The reason the air pump often fails is from a defective air pump check valve that allows exhaust gasses to contaminate the pump.Replacement of the air pump and check valve is necessary to address this issue.

One thing to be aware of: If the problem is not addressed eventually these exhaust gasses can contaminate the MAF Sensor and Oxygen Sensors as well, causing the engine to run very poorly and cost much more to fix.

1998 Volvo C70 Reviews

Hey Great Falls, MT, If your car is like my 98' C70 it's more than likely that a spring has fallen off of your passenger seat. It's located near the rotating hinge where the seat folds forward/backward.. The spring holds a metal arm against a connection so when the seat is manually put forward the controls dis-engage (safety feature). When the spring falls off the arm becomes loo...
love this car. just wish i could find out how to make the passenger seat work. looks like there has been a recall on this, can i still bring it in for repair?
The C70 is a fun car to drive! I think it is the first Volvo convertible, and although I had a few problems with the top and the windows, they were addressed under the Volvo warranty. When the sun is out, the C70 is a blast!
