1998 Volvo C70 ProblemsConvertible Tops May Have Problems With Micro-Switches/Potentiometers
The convertible top may have problems with the micro-switches and potentiometers that help control the raising and lowering of the top.
The anti-lock brake system (ABS) Control Unit has a high failure rate. When this fault occurs, the ABS light will illuminate and codes may be stored indicating a problem with the ABS Pump Motor, or Wheel Speed Sensors, but the problem is the ABS Control Module.
Other symptoms may include an illuminated Check Engine and transmission shift light. and the speedometer may stop working as well.
Note: The brake system will operate normally however during a panic stop the Anti Lock Brakes will not work and the wheels may lock-up, causing a lack of vehicle control under these situations.
If the check engine light is on and diagnostic trouble codes point to the air pump system, then the entire system needs to be checked.
There are a few issues that arise from the vacuum lines becoming plugged or disconnected but the most common issue is the air pump itself fails. The reason the air pump often fails is from a defective air pump check valve that allows exhaust gasses to contaminate the pump.Replacement of the air pump and check valve is necessary to address this issue.
One thing to be aware of: If the problem is not addressed eventually these exhaust gasses can contaminate the MAF Sensor and Oxygen Sensors as well, causing the engine to run very poorly and cost much more to fix.
