The Check Engine Light may illuminate because a component of the oxygen sensor stops working. As a result the engine computer is unable to determine the proper ratio of air to fuel for the engine. Replacing the failed oxygen sensor should correct this concern.

2004 Toyota Solara Problems
Debris can get into the idle air control valve. This will restrict the air flow into the engine, causing idle speed and/or stalling when cold. The valve can be cleaned or replaced to correct this concern.
Intermittent failure of a purge control valve in the evaporative emission system can cause the Check Engine Light to illuminate. A failed valve should be replaced to correct this problem.
On higher mileage vehicles, an engine misfire may develop and/or the Check Engine Light may illuminate due to a failed ignition coil. It is not uncommon to replace all the coils when the first one fails in order to prevent return trips to the repair shop.

2004 Toyota Solara Reviews
I love my Solara! Sporty, love the body style, drives great, has been reliable from the beginning. I had a 1995 Camry Coupe and traded it in for the '04 Solara. The '95 Camry was still running great in '05 when I traded it. I do agree with others that the only bad thing about the '04 Solara is the cracking dash. Wish there was a simple, relatively inexpensive solution to the problem - I don't like the velour dash covers.
The best car I've ever owned. Can't say enough about its reliability and appearance. Have recently replaced the struts and it rides like new.
I have a 2004 Toyota Solara convertible and the inside is
falling apart. The dash board is cracking everywhere and the arm rest are all wrinkle.I owne 3 lexus and those cars are fantastic. Very desappointed with Toyota. I went to see if they would do anything to help the situation without any success.
ALL great except serious cracking in dashboard. Toyota recognizes the issue but so far refuses to accept responsiblity
I have a 2004 Toyota Solara Convertible love the car It also leaks on the drivers side after a wash or rain storm. But my main question is when we first start the car most of the time I get a big cloud of white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. But as it warms up no smoke but shut it off and let it sit for 1 hr or more start up and white smoke Thanks Woody
