1998 Toyota RAV4 Repair and Maintenance

A guide to problems, costs, maintenance and repair for your 1998 Toyota RAV4

1998 Toyota RAV4 Problems

The Evaporative system may have problems with the vapor canister releasing charcoal pellets that plug the vent valve. Typically a Code P0441, P0442 and P0446 will be set. The key code is the P0446 which is a vent valve electrical failure. The proper repair is to replace the entire canister with all the valves as a unit. This is located on top of the fuel tank and is expensive. Our Technicians tell us that for awhile Toyota was covering these problems, but this may have changed. It would not hurt to call the dealer if this problem occurs to see if Toyota is still helping with these repairs.

If the car will not start, the most likely problem is worn or corroded solenoid contacts in the starter. Usually, these parts can be replaced without purchasing a new starter.

my rav 4 will start but only runs for about 20-30 sec then dies but then try to start it again and it starts for about 20-30 sec and dies again???

1998 Toyota RAV4 Questions

I don't hear any rattle sound when I starts the engine, it only makes this horrible sound when driving up a hill or overtaking another cars. is that timing belt or something else?

after driving for a while it just went dead ,i tried starting it and noticed the engine turns but does not start.i checked ignition and fuel and they are both good.could it be a broken timing belt or a broken camshaft?

Rav4, 4WD manual. Most what I read suggests dropping engine and trans to replace clutch. Besides clutch and its associated repairables, what else should I have done? Oil and/or water pump? Timing belt/chain? Valve job (blows a little smoke on start after sitting)? Thanks in advance

1998 Toyota RAV4 Reviews

I have had my 1998 Rav4 for 11 years...it now has almost 193,000 miles on it. It has a leak in the rack and pinion steering that I am getting fixed. I change the oil every 3K miles....very few problems. This has been the best mv I have ever owned.

I have had my 1998 Rav for 13 years and have never had a problem, until now at 140,000 miles, I need to have new brake pads put in. Air conditioning works better than my new Ford Edge.
