1999 Saturn SL2 Repair and Maintenance

A guide to problems, costs, maintenance and repair for your 1999 Saturn SL2

1999 Saturn SL2 Problems

Front brake rotors can wear causing a pulsation felt in the brake pedal. Our technicians tell us this condition is best corrected by replacement of the front rotors and brake pads.

The alternator may fail causing the charge light to illuminate. Driving with this condition will eventually cause the engine to stall due to low system voltage.

Illumination of the Check Engine Light can be caused by a loose or worn gas cap.

1999 Saturn SL2 Questions

Sometimes it is okay when hot, if the engine cycle is in one position and not another. I have moved it in gear, just a bit, and I could start it. Mostly though, I start it on compression, on an incline, if it won't start when hot. Yes, it has a standard (stick) transmission.

I had to replace the master cylinder on the Saturn. I primed the cylinder off the car and thought I got all the air out of the cylinder, but now the brake pedal goes all the way to the floor and I cannot seam to get the air out of the lines. Any ideas on what I need to do?

I have 180,00 miles of my driving on this car. I drive it hard, as I have all my cars. This holds up to my jack rabbit starts, power add-ons / modifications, fast driving and everything else I have thrown at it. It drives 13 hours straight on a regular basis and the only complaints I have are it burns a quart of oil ever 1000 miles and the brakes rotors have a tendency to run hot and warp. (...
