Oldsmobile 98 Car Reviews

I lucked into this car. I am the third owner, bought it with 135000 miles....pretty darn good for a 15 year old car!. Everything works, seats, windows, stereo, etc. Wonderful Cadillac ride, quiet, no rattles, but a few interior squeaks now and then. The leather is wonderful, no cracks, looks two years old, not 15.
The body is in exceptional shape..no dents dings, rust etc. Everything straight and smooth. It has the usual 90's GM paint issues, peeling off plastic bumpers, clear-coat coming off, but is purely a cosmetic issue. Got it for $1200. Have put $800 for little niggliy things...power window switch, seat switch, blower motor was stuck on high, EGR replaced. Still needs new struts, but that will have to wait. I have driven this to Atlanta and back, 1300 mile round trip, and got FANTASTIC mileage...28MPG going 80MPH!!!

I have no clue how many miles the car has because the entire digital dash quit working. The air-conditioning doesn't work either and a ton of other things. Now, I've been told the head gasket is starting to go which will cost more to fix than the car is worth! On the up side it is a comfy car with lots of leg room and head room. It drives smooth and it's a pretty quiet car. When it shifts it doesn't jerk around which is nice and mine still has the original sound system which sounds pretty good. It steers like a dream and I could probably drive it with one finger (except that's not too safe ^_^).

Car has 80,000 miles on it and it runs great! a/c and heat perfect. interior comfy. trunk big! rides smooooth!

Oldsmobile 98 Problems

Brakes
  • Brake fluid can become dirty and may cause problems in the brake system; it should be flushed every 60,000 miles.
  • The ABS accumulator may fail causing loss of power brake assist. (The brake pedal will become very hard).
  • The ABS master cylinder assembly may fail internally causing the ABS light to illuminate.
Engine
  • The spark plugs should be replaced every 30,000 miles and the spark plug boots should be checked for hot spots and cracks.
  • The mass air flow or crankshaft position sensors may fail causing the engine to stall intermittently.
  • The intake manifold gaskets can develop external engine oil leaks. The intake manifold will need to be removed and the gaskets replaced to correct this issue.
  • The water pump may prematurely fail causing loss of engine coolant and engine overheating.
  • The fuel pump can fail causing the engine to stall and not restart. Our technicians highly recommend to replace your fuel filter every 30,000 miles to help prevent undue strain on the fuel pump.
  • The cam sensor interrupter (magnet) may fall off of the camshaft gear causing the check engine (service engine soon) light to illuminate.
Electrical & Lights
  • If the ABS light on the instrument panel illuminates, our technicians recommend checking the brake lamps first. It could indicate that a brake light is not working or has burned out.
  • The power window motors may fail causing the window to move slowly or stop in mid travel. Window may start working again after the motor cools off.
Suspension & Steering
  • The front struts may show signs of wear, or be excessively bouncy ride at freeway speeds. This may begin to occur at around 75,000 miles.
  • The high pressure power steering hose will commonly leak fluid; it should be replaced.
  • The steering rack may fail causing a loss of power steering fluid as a result the steering may become hard to turn.
  • The outer tie rod ends on the steering linkage may wear causing excessive free play in the steering.
Exhaust & Emissions The Engine Control Module (ECM) can fail causing stalling, and engine and transmission drivability concerns.
Heating & Air Conditioning Our technicians highly recommend that the engine coolant be replaced every 30,000 miles.
Drive Train
  • The rubber transmission cooler lines commonly leak fluid.
  • You may be able to prevent transmission problems by servicing the transmission and inspecting the fluid every 30,000 miles. If the fluid is dark or burned then the transmission system should be completely flushed.
