1997 Mercury Sable Problems
The engine oil pan gasket can develop a leak. Leaking oil may accumulate on the exhaust system resulting in a burning smell. Replacing the gasket should correct this leak.
The magnet for the camshaft position sensor may fall out of its mount and damage the synchronizers. This causes long crank times when starting the engine and may cause the Check Engine Light to illuminate. If this happens, both the magnets and the synchronizers need to be replaced.
The synchronizer shaft for the camshaft position sensor can cause a loud squeak or chirping noise due to failure of the upper bushing. The noise may be erratic and is usually present when the engine is warm.

1997 Mercury Sable Recalls
Ford has recalled certain 1997-1998 Taurus and Mercury Sable vehicles and 1998 Contour, Mercury Mystique, Lincoln Navigator, and Town Car models to provide owners with proper instructions on how to aim their headlamps. If there is a need to adjust the headlamps, during headlamp replacement for example, there is a lack of proper documentation on how to properly perform the adjustment. Ford will mail vehicle owners a new owner guide containing revised aiming instructions.
Ford has recalled certain 1997 Taurus and Mercury Sable vehicles and 1997-1998 Windstar vehicles for a possible transmission leak. The low-intermediate servo cover may become detached, causing a fluid leak. Fluid leaking onto the catalytic converters could cause a fire. Dealers will inspect the transmission and replace the affected servo covers.
Ford has recalled certain 1996-1997 Taurus, Windstar, Mercury Sable, and Lincoln Continental vehicles for a concern with the park mechanism in the transmission. The park pawl mechanism may not engage even though the shifter indicates the vehicle is in "Park." This could cause the vehicle to move unexpectedly and cause a crash or injury. Dealers will repair the parking pawl bracket in the transaxle.

The transmission had to be completely rebuild at about 77,000 miles, the interior lights stay on long after the doors are closed etc. On the positive side the AC and heater work great as does the stereo and other components. It also has a nic...
