1994 Honda Civic, Joe Langan, Roscoe, NY, March 06, 2010 01:38

One of the best automobiles I have ever owned. Will have a Civic as long as they keep running like this. Nothing beats a Honda

2002 Honda Civic, Nothra, Tempe, AZ, February 28, 2010 22:03

Had no problems up until about 90k miles. My AC started binding up, which froze the drive belt and fried the alternator, which took out the battery. All told the damage came up to $2000 in one go. I live in Phoenix, but I tried to use the AC sparingly and just open up the windows so the AC dying was a surprise. Not the most pleasant, but overall it has been a great little car.

1990 Honda Civic, Luvraro, Mosier, OR, February 24, 2010 07:38

293,000+ miles and I have had brakes and tires repaired or replaced. My largest expense on this car has been having a mouse nest removed from the heating system. My highest gas mileage has been 47 miles per gallon, on cruise control at 55 miles per hour. I love this car!!!

1999 Honda Civic, wageslave, Castleton On Hudson, NY, February 14, 2010 20:19

Very solid car. Nothing but scheduled maintenance, and normal maintenance w/150K, e.g., shocks, oil pan gasket, exhaust, etc.

1997 Honda Civic, CarGuy22, Sharon, WI, February 09, 2010 14:40

I have a 1997 Civic EX Sedan and LOVE IT. I commute 100 miles a day for work and this car has been great. It has 214,000 miles and still runs great.
To make my commute more comfortable I replaced the front seats with seats from an Acura Integra. Huge improvement. I also tinted the windows and installed a remote start for the cold winter mornings.
If I need any body work done to it I buy my repair supplies from Auto Body Toolmart and fix anything that needs fixing.

2004 Honda Civic, geoff18, Long Beach, CA, January 18, 2010 12:45

For the money and for what this car is, I am very pleased. Its certainly not a luxury vehicle, but I didn't pay for a luxury vehicle. I have 60K and thus far have had no major issues or unreasonable maintenance issues.

2000 Honda Civic, spyrofae, Bloomington, IL, January 12, 2010 10:51

I've had this car since college, 2 moves (NC and MD) and now with 2 kids, and am up to 107,000. It's a great, if basic, car. My Civic has had the muffler replaced (salty roads in MD) but no other major repairs, easy to care for, and runs wonderfully. Good for city commutes and long distance trips. The only change I would make is for more power to the engine. Getting it to speed up quickly, or up hill, requires turning off the a/c and really working the gas.

1990 Honda Civic, robertfletcher, Marysville, WA, December 28, 2009 17:23

2009 Honda Civic, Rodney5950, Fort Belvoir, VA, November 29, 2009 19:40

Excellent marks for this car. Suprisingly comfortable for its small size and enough engine horse power to get up and go when needed. My only complaint is the transmission shifts stiff in and out of 1st gear. Hopefully, this is normal but I would think it would shift silky smooth in any gear.

1993 Honda Civic, GraemeF, Blaine, WA, October 01, 2009 07:53

I have the DX hatchback. I've had this car for 2 years now. Great gas mileage, reliable, even handles in the snow (manual trans.). Not the fanciest car I've owned, but it works without giving me a headache and maintenance is easy on this car. I plan on running this car into the ground in 15 years.

1995 Honda Civic, vinayrana1993, Plattsburgh, NY, September 01, 2009 19:09

Excellent car. Very reliable the car now has about 150,000 miles and is still in perfect condition.

1997 Honda Civic, Giabella, Nanuet, NY, August 29, 2009 10:47

3rd Civic I've owned. Great car. Wish they still made the hatchback. Just wish the seat material was a little tougher.

1990 Honda Civic, aleen_o, Costa Mesa, CA, August 18, 2009 23:35

1990 Honda Civic Hatchback with 165,000 miles still gets great gas mileage and needed nothing til 19-years-old a new clutch and transmission (with a 5th gear, I'll never be without again!). Great reliable roomy car, I'd buy one again (but not the new Civics--too small, all airbag dashboard, small windows/blind spots and less cargo space). I'd love another Civic Hatchback 10 years old or less. Minor Drawbacks: LOW RIDER scrapes bottom; wipers poor; small tires to inflate often; mechanics always overfill the oil (takes only 3.5 quarts); A/C strains uphill so I hit the condenser button off and on; brakes shudder; stinks on startup (per the Manual); cabin noisy and rides a bit rough though from 1990 has Accord suspension, but hey, every car's got some flaws, and these are minor for a car that never lets this gal down! :)

2006 Honda Civic, squtront, Northbrook, IL, July 14, 2009 10:12

First new Honda Civic for me just 3 years old this month & with 31000 miles. My only costs are oil changes @ 5000 & rotate tires @ 10000. Best car I've ever owned and in my 72 years I've owned quite a few. Mileage on hwy tops 42mpg and in the summer around town 33mpg. Ride is a little choppy, my last car was a Lincoln LS, so it takes awhile to get used to but on long road trips, 1700 miles,I had no back problems or leg cramps. My wife drives a '97 Civic with 68000 miles and it still gets 28-30 mpg around town, mostly short trips.

2000 Honda Civic, Boredcivic, Livonia, MI, June 19, 2009 10:11

Cheap, economical car with no bells or whistles. In fact, the car really is just that a car. Nothing more. Its features are limited, and it shows. Pros: it is cheap and easy to park, does not attract attention. Cons: way underpowered (you need to shut off the A/C to accelerate uphill), and forget passing in tight spots; Hard to get in (it is a car designed for the ave. height of Asians); rides like a pet rock (I can feel the road through the floor and seat as if I am reading braille with my feet and bum).

2006 Honda Civic, debdebtig, Barrington, NH, May 14, 2009 09:10

This has been one of the most reliable cars I've ever owned. I've had very few problems with it and would definitely buy another one.

2008 Honda Civic, A1950, Mesa, AZ, April 12, 2009 09:05

I purchased this car on Valentine's Day at CarMax. I really like the comfort, and reliability of this car. The stereo system is awesome and parking is a breeze. Because of the short front end, one cannot see how close you are when parking, and I underestimate the distance! But, I think it is my poor depth perception...LOL! I also found it in my favorite color: Metallic Blue! I've only put 802 miles on it in 2 months, so repairs have not been an issue. Great car, I will have this one for along time. Had my 1995 Camry 14 years before I traded it in for the Civic, and it STILL ran great!.

1990 Honda Civic, smokediver1809, Leetonia, OH, April 09, 2009 05:09

This is one of my favorite car to drive, with manual transmission you have alots of fun drive it. But the only problem I have is finding parts for my wagon.

1997 Honda Civic, nancysid, Fort Lauderdale, FL, April 06, 2009 11:57

i inherited this car from my daughter when she bought a new 07 civic. she purchased this car new (her first car), and i believe she maintained it fairly well. it is pretty rough outside (red paint in florida sun) but still nice inside. i like driving this car better than our 04 accord. it handles really well. i had some a**h*** in a beemer tailgating me coming off I95, but he kind of disappeared when i took the exit at 65! i might keep this another ten years unless i find a nice crx.

1998 Honda Civic, LBJ, Hiram, ME, February 18, 2009 18:35

I purchased a used 1998 Honda LX - 150,000. one month later I had to ferret out a worn wire casing causing a ground. Two sources helped Hondatech and alldata. I am annoyed by the electrical issues, however, the car handles well - fits me comfortably at 6 ft tall- and gets an average of 42 mpg.

1991 Honda Civic, Robert Isbell, Alameda, CA, February 02, 2009 17:50

This has been one of my favorite cars. Great power, great handling, great gas mileage and good looks too. Easy to maintain and fun to drive. The only issue I had was the brake rotors would warp and cause the steering wheel to shake when braking at high speeds.

2000 Honda Civic, volvodude, Los Angeles, CA, January 05, 2009 09:11

This was an excellent commuter car. No frills but it worked consistently with no major problems. The paint has begun to sunburst a little bit but overall was definitely reliable.

2002 Honda Civic, cynthzuehl, Corpus Christi, TX, December 24, 2008 07:39

This care is awesome bought it used it is awesome shade of bubble gum pink. It now has 200,000 miles on it. of course routine break tire and suspension replacement. I noticed some people said that their steering wheel shakes REPLACE BREAKS! Your car does need love and care as with any car does, replace your breaks people! I just replaced mine for the first time this year I let them get too bad. I put 600 miles a week on it...little trooper. The hood mount just broke the latch shattered this week, I hit a seagull last summer and it finally gave way. The stock stereo has awesome base and all, my friends love it, it has a cassette player and cd player too!!!! I have the LX model. When I buy a new car one day years from now I will only buy Honda. THis car still gets 35-40 miles a gallon! (with a good tail wind or drafting 40! lol).

2003 Honda Civic, abcs, Seattle, WA, December 23, 2008 22:13

Hybrid model. Once you get used to the "auto stop" feature, it's challenging to engage it in the so-many instances that you find yourself stopped. Getting it started from auto stop is best if one pretends like it's a manual transmission. The car handles well, accelerates smoothly enough (adequate but not great power), and the MPG excels with the better weather (in cooler and/or inclement weather, the MPG drops due to Honda's A/C being used to clear the Honda-typical window fogging). The only oddity is that there's no audible warning if you happen to leave your lights on, and the battery goes dead fast. But, a standard vehicle can be used to recharge it. Due to its compact size, only the driver has a hand rest. Black dash attracts dust. To change oil, a plastic panel below engine needs to be removed, but easy-to-break plastic grommet-like attachments make it costly to do yourself at $3 per x10. Best to pay to have a professional handle it. A nearby dealer (Klein) fortunately has a package plan where changes are $20 per.

2005 Honda Civic, Ladybug Driver, San Francisco, CA, December 22, 2008 10:00

What a fantastic little workhorse! I love this car for its reliability and excellent gas mileage - it never ends up in the shop. The repair and maintenance on this car is most affordable (that's because it really never needs any repairs). For the amazingly low price, I think the car is designed nicely - and it's easy to park in a big city. Both the hybrid and gas version have excellent gas mileage.

1995 Honda Civic, hemicuda, San Mateo, CA, December 09, 2008 15:33

Bought this car for my mom in 1995 and she's put 48,000 miles on it, changed the brakes once and the battery. very reliable car!!

2004 Honda Civic, sarahe, Laguna Beach, CA, November 03, 2008 20:31

This is a great car. It rides better than I thought, the brakes are great, the electrical system has never been a problem, and it has great AC and heat!

1992 Honda Civic, retiredcatlady, La Verne, CA, November 01, 2008 11:11

This is the best ever car I've owned. It still used freon and I should have upgraded when I had the chance, but was living Oregon and didn't use AC that much. I have 145,000 miles on it and still runs like a dream. 30mpg in town and 40mpg on the freeway.

2004 Honda Civic, MetFan, Fort Lauderdale, FL, October 30, 2008 18:31

great little car, super on gas and very economical!

1994 Honda Civic, 94 civic, Newbury Park, CA, October 28, 2008 22:28

over 250,000 miles with no major problems. Have had the water pump replaced once and and ignition coil, That is it. I keep waiting for this car to die so I can get a new one but it just keeps going.

1993 Honda Civic, DDover86, Montclair, NJ, October 16, 2008 16:41

This is the most reliable car that I have ever owned. I would never buy anything else but a Honda from now on. The first 100,000 miles only needed routine oil changes. You absolutely could not beat it! If you want quality for your money, you want a Honda

2000 Honda Civic, rdude135, Alameda, CA, October 07, 2008 16:30

This EX Civic has been a good car. The interior has held up well, but the paint on the hood shows signs of checking. The steering wheel shakes when I step on the brakes and that has been an issue since I can remember. The clutch and drive train have worked flawlessly. With over 150K on the car the engine uses oil, and I have to keep a close eye on the level. Overall the car has been great. I definitely will purchase another Honda when I look for another car.

2007 Honda Civic, Andy Y, Walnut Creek, CA, September 25, 2008 15:15

This was my first new car and I love my car!
I had the problem with my sun visors and the dealer took care of me. I've had one leak from my timing chain tensioner cover (warranty) and I just replaced the tires. With the synthetic oil I'm getting 33-35 mpg each tank!

Sometimes the AC takes a little long to get cold but I'm really nit picking

1995 Honda Civic, benlat, Portland, OR, August 23, 2008 08:16

The Honda is excellent!
The only problem is the exhaust, I have had it repaired FULLY three years ago and its falling apart again.
other than that, the car always runs and never has any problems. Its been 5 solid years! !

Honda Civic Problems

Brakes The front disc brake rotors can warp and cause a vibration when braking. The rotors will need to be machined or in cases where they have worn out, replaced to correct this issue.
Engine
  • An oil leak at the spark plug area (spark plug tubes) can be caused by a failing valve cover sealing rubber and/or camshaft holder o-ring. The sealing rubber and o-ring will need to be replaced to address this issue.
  • Certain models can leak oil externally or allow coolant into the combustion chamber due to a faulty head gasket. The head gasket needs to be replaced to correct this problem.
Exhaust & Emissions
  • The evaporative emission control solenoid can fail in areas of the country where salt is used on the roads during winter. The solenoid needs to be replaced to correct this issue.
  • Impact damage to the front of the vehicle can cause the primary oxygen sensor to blow fuse 15 and cause the Check Engine light (MIL) to come on. In most cases the primary oxygen sensor needs replacing and a new fuse installed to repair the issue.
  • On certain models poor igniter connections can cause misfires and catalyst deterioration. Cleaning and securing the connections will correct the problem.
  • Primary oxygen sensor heater failures can cause a Check Engine light. Replacing the sensor is required to repair this issue.
  • Cracked exhaust is common on both exhaust manifolds and manifold/catalytic converter combination. Replacing the cracked component will repair the problem.
  • On certain models in colder climates the Check Engine light can set due to moisture in the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor freezing. The MAP sensor needs to be replaced and on some models the intake manifold needs replacing also.
Drive Train
  • The shift control solenoid externally mounted on the transmission can fail and causes a harsh 1-2 shift. Replacing the shift solenoid and flushing the transmission with genuine Honda automatic transmission fluid may eliminate harsh shifting characteristics. A broken internal spring can cause the same  issue. If the shift control solenoid does not repair the problem, the transmission will have to be replaced.
  • Some models have an issue where a faulty thermostat does not allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature and because of that the computer will not allow the torque converter to operate in the lock-up mode. Replacing the thermostat will repair this issue.
Suspension & Steering Rear trailing arm bushings crack and break. The trailing arm bushings will need to be replaced when they break.
Electrical & Lights Leaking tail light gaskets can allow water into the tail light assembly and inside the vehicle. Replacing the tail light gaskets is needed to repair this issue.
Heating & Air Conditioning
  • Evaporators can leak. Any leaking A/C component will need to be replaced for the A/C to work as designed.
  • Evaporators can collect mold and give off a foul smell. Disinfecting the evaporator or replacing it will address this issue.
  • The A/C idler pulley can go bad and cause a growling noise. The idler pulley will have to be replaced to stop the noise.
