1997 Geo Metro Problems

Warped rotors due to uneven lug nut torque

The brake pedal may pulsate on apply due to warped brake rotors. This condition is commonly caused by uneven lug nut torque. Proper lug nut torque is recommended to try and avoid this concern.

Distributor Cap and Spark Plug Wires May Fail

The Geo Metro uses a 1.0L 3 cylinder engine that is very sensitive to faulty spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and distributor rotor. When one of these ignition system components fail, the Geo Metro will experience one or more of the following:

-Stalling

-Difficulty starting

-Stuttering with loss of power

-Hesitation at various engine speeds

If these issues are related to the components listed above, changing the damaged component will resolve the issue. Less common possible causes are the ignition coil, alternator, and crankshaft position sensor. 

The ABS light may illuminate

The anti-lock brake system (ABS) light may illuminate, especially in hot or humid weather, due to binding in the ABS motor pack. Our technicians tell us that replacement of the motor pack will be necessary to correct this concern.

Vehicle Comes Out Of Park Without Use Of Key Or Brake

The shift lever may be moved from park without pressing the brake, turning the key, or pressing the release button on the shift lever. Dealers will replace the shifter assembly free of charge to resolve the concern.

I bought a 97 geo metro hatchback in 02 at 36,000 miles it now has 205,000 and still running strong, it needs alot of work basic wear and tear work like brakes, exhaust, it needs a catalic converter for emmisions but im going to pay it and put the car in semi-retirement, just use it for around town errands
