1996 Acura TL Problems

Check Engine and D4 Lights Flashing

The 1998-2014 Acura TL V6 may develop issues with the automatic transmission.

Rough shifting may occur, and the “D4” light and check engine may begin to blink. The check engine light will also illuminate, and OBD trouble codes P0700, P0730, P0740, P0780, P1768 and/or P1768 will be stored in the computer.

If the transmission shifts roughly, the failure is very likely mechanical failure of the transmission. If the transmission performs normally, a faulty sensor, or dirty transmission fluid may be the case.

In most cases, it is necessary to use professional diagnostic equipment to provide a diagnosis, and complete the repair.

The longevity of the transmission is dependent on strict adherence to the manufacturer's recommendation for ATF replacement intervals and procedure.

Green "Drive" Light on Dashboard May Burn Out

The green "Drive" light on the dashboard tends to burn out, requiring replacement of the burned out bulb.

Squeak Type Noise From Front Door Glass

A squeak type noise may be noted when raising or lowering the front door glass. Our technicians tell us that in most cases this issue can be corrected by replacing the door glass seal.

1996 Acura TL Recalls

Acura Recalls 1996–1998 TL and 1996–1999 RL Models Due to a Loose Transmission Case Bolt

Acura is recalling certain 1996–1998 TL and 1996–1999 RL models because an automatic transmission case bolt may loosen and fall out, allowing the transmission to disengage from the differential. This may cause a loss of power to the drive wheels without warning. Also, a parked vehicle could move unexpectedly if the parking brake is not set. Dealers will install a redesigned transmission case bolt to correct this issue.

Premature Ball Joint Wear

The ball joints in the front suspension may prematurely wear out. The ball joints could break in severe circumstances, which may cause an accident. Dealers will replace the front suspension lower ball joints. This recall is expected to begin by May 17, 1999.

my 96 tl just decided it did not want to start anymore. after process of going into every possible cause, discovered that the fuel pump relay went bad( the relay thats up at the top but behind the fuse panel on the drivers side, very hard to find- the relay had cold solder joint cracking, and I just desoldered 4 spots, and resoldered the 4 points, put it back together, reinstalled it behind th...
what a car ! bought it new in 1996 - still runs great with 240,000 miles on it; oil changes, brakes and tire replacements only to date.
This ride is Boss!! Cool and luxury too. As with any vehicle, there are some minor problems to deal with but well worth it. Tranny and suspension does seem to be a weak point but fixable. Not as quiet inside as I like but that too can be fixed. Probably with some Dynamat lining. For the most part, a great ride.
