Acura CL Questions and Answers

Zuhel, 1998 Acura CL, 4 cylinder, Kissimmee, FL, January 05, 2009, 14:43

I have a standard 98 Acura CL and it has a transmission leak. How can I check the transmission fluid to see if it's low? where is it located?

Andy Y, January 05, 2009, 14:55

If you have a standard/manual transmission, there is a level check bolt on the side of the transmission that needs to be removed to check the fluid level. Fluid will come out of the hole if the level is OK, none if it's low. It might be a good idea to find a repair manual at your local auto parts store or maybe an online Acura forum.
The automatic should have a dipstick and the owners manual will probably show how to check the fluid level.
Also check your engine oil level, just in case

It should. AEM's website says no. All intakes are the same. Buy any intake and get a K&N filter. Cold air and short ram. It's all the same. I don't car what people tell you. There wrong if they say otherwise.

Nascarfish 910, Acura CL, December 12, 2008, 14:23

Something is up with either my clutch or tranny. It is very hard to get into any gear, and the clutch is not disengaging, or it is engaging very low to the floor. Most of the time when in first with pedal all the down it still wants to move/bounce. I tried changing the clutch fluid, but that did not help at all. Any suggestions on what to check next, and how do I check to see if master/slave cylinder is ok or not. Thanks for your help.....
I will try adjusting it but it looks as though it is almost all the way out....let me go see if there is anymore adjustment.....
I adjusted it all the way out, which was not much. It seems a little better but it still wants to go when in 1st and the pedal is depressed to the floor......argh!

offroadjunkie 34, December 12, 2008, 14:33

have you tried actually adjusting the clutch rod itself (the rod that links the clutch pedal to the hydraulic mastercylinder. if the clutch is not fully disengaging when at the floor, then the distance on the clutch rod between the clutch pedal and the firewall needs to be shortened (achieved by turning the tensioning nuts on the clutch rod clockwise), and this will in turn move your actual clutch "pedal" upwards more, allowing you to push the pedal down more to get more release of the pressure plates in the clutch.

Can a Buddyclub Spec III exhaust system be attached to a base model Integra/RSX with a K20A3 engine?

On the buddyclub website it says it can only be connected to the Type R.
Is there any way it can be fitted to my engine?
The Type R has the K20A engine.

I Just bought a 98 acura cl, the body is in excellent shape except for the hood that has a dent in it. Im thinking of getting a new hood from but dont really want to pay to have it install so I wanted to know if its difficult to replace the hood or if its worth paying to have it installed.

do you know how to use basic tools? Like wrentch and ratchet? And know what sizes are? If you know than its easy.

JDM_HERO 566, December 07, 2008, 20:47

i believe its fairly easy to do scale of 1 to 10. about a 3 because you will need two people (yourself and another) to hold the hood as you align it. i think only four bolts to do this.

Brian S 404, December 07, 2008, 19:57

Pretty easy to replace, only a few bolts. When installing the new one you have to keep the bolts a little loose until you have the hood aligned to close properly, then snug em' down. It will take 2 people.

My car was having problems stalling on me while driving. I brought it in to get fixed which end up costing me over $400 but days later my car was stalling on me again. I brought it back to the repair shop and it was discovered that the problem was actually the ignition switch costing another $180. There happen to be an Acura recall in 2002 or 2003, can they reimburse me the cost of having to get the ignition switch fixed even after this long?

yes...the part was recalled therefore if/when it developes a problem you are entitled to replacement or value reimbursement but only for the second trip to the mechanic..it's not their fault the guy didn't know what he was doing the first time...contact you nearest dealership or the manufactureers website for help

snookynibbles 448, December 07, 2008, 14:49

Personally, I wouldn't do it...

Are you having motor problems? Honda (Acura) engines are VERY robust...if you take care of your car, you could put many more miles on that motor before requiring serious work.

Personally, I'd take the car to a competent mechanic to give it a look-over. So long as the rings are still good, and the engine's not been damaged (i.e., warped head from overheating, etc.), I'd leave well enough alone. You'd be advised to make sure your timing belt is not in need of service, and that the valves are properly adjusted. Regular maintenance issues are more likely to point to serviceable items like your fuel injectors, and intake system. Again, if your motor's running fine, you shouldn't need to fiddle with the engine internals unless you have known ring, valve, bearings, or seal problems. And such things are managed by rebuilds, not engine swap-outs.

OK, if you absolutely must go buy a newer engine (a Honda J32A1), try the salvage yards for a TL/CL that suffered an early death from a rear-end collision.

PS - One BIG issue you'lll face if you drop an '00-'03 motor in place of your '99. It was '00 (I believe) that Honda Motor Company switched over from distributor/points to solid state ignition. Dropping a newer engine in may not be simple 'plug 'n play'. You may need to address other issues such as your ignition system & the engine control unit (ECU).

Busta 1999 Acura CL Bradley, SD January 04, 2009 23:01

I have the 2.3 liter 4 cylinder CL and it has held up really well. I debated getting an Accord but I decided to treat myself to the CL and have not regretted it. The brakes are strong and the engine gets almost 28 mpg on the highway. Not bad for a luxury coupe. The leather seats have cracked a bit but that is fairly normal for a 10 year old car. It hasn't really needed any repairs that were unexpected except the motor mounts that have gone out twice. Make sure to get the timing belt changed (and the water pump too) as it says in the owners' manual so you don't have to have a valve job. That happened to my cousin.
