When the engine stalled, would it crank over afterward or just not crank? Do the head lights appear bright? The battery cable end sounds like it has a "non original" battery cable end. Start there first it needs to be fixed if it is not the problem it is a potential problem. Bad battery connections cause a voltage drop which could cause a stall or no start condition. If you hear the pump run it could still be an intermittent problem but if the engine wont start and you hear it run, I would verify fuel pressure at the fuel rail in the engine compartment and check for spark.
