car wont start on 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse

car was driving fine went to shift into 2nd when i heard something metal hit the ground lots of smoke and car wont start anymore,lots of fluid on the street and no oil left in engine i can see the oil filter when i look under any ideas?

It sounds like catastrophic engine failure. The only time I ever had anything similar happen was when I was driving and the car broke its crackshaft. It knocked a hole in the side of the block. Engine replacement was the only solution. Unfortunately what you describe sounds pretty bad.
