Question: car will start & run fine but as soon as I put it in gear to pull off it cut off

Rookie

This problem started on Friday 6/8/12 by hesitating to crank since my gas was on Empty. I filled the tank and it drove fine all weekend but yesterday 6/11/12 it started hesitating to crank but always cranked and would run fine but as soon as I put it in gear it would cut off. It had a 1/2 tank of gas so that was not the problem. Please advise.

May check fuel filter to see if its causing a restriction ....could have picked up some debri from bottom of fuel tank when you ran it low.
