1995 Ford Mustang Cobra Question: car will run for a short time then shut off. wont start up for a few minutes.

this problem is getting worse. at first the check engine light would come on and car would run rough then it would clear up. i replaced disterbter, cap, cole. now getting to the point it will fire up and then shut off after a few seconds then wont fired back up for hours.

    This is often caused by a clogged in tank fuel filter. When the car is started and run, dirt and gunk will be pulled against the in tank fuel filter or sock as some people call it, restricting flow and causing the engine to die. After the car has sat for some time, the dirt falls off the filter and the car will fire back up and run normally until the filter clogs up again. The fix is to remove the fuel tank, remove the fuel pump and filter assembly, replace the fuel filter and clean the inside of the fuel tank. Its a good idea to consider replacing the fuel pump at this time if the car has some mileage on it, this a job you dont want to do twice. I'd suggest changing the inline fuel filter (between the pump and injectors) after replacing the in tank filter.
