First is it Manual transmission? will it pop start? also the starter is a two-piece part... soloniod and starter motor... and if the solonoid is weak, or the battery is weak, the solonoid won't push out the pinion far enough to engage the flywheel. This may be why you "think" the starters doing it's job, but it don't start. If it will pop start and run fine, replace starter and solonoid combo (after verifying battery at good charge) and all should be well.
