Question: Car stalled, smoke from the hood and some major fluid leakage?

Question

Visitor, Detroit, MI, May 17, 2011, 14:22

yesterday while driving i got a symbol on my dash that looked like a sailboat. i googled it and it seems its a cooling problem? well that light came on for about ten minutes then my car stopped working. The wheel locked up, couldnt press the gas.. the only thing i could do was press the breaks(thank god) . i noticed it was leaking pretty bad. i couldn't tell what color the liquids were because the road was to dark. i've been on the internet all day trying to see what's going on . i really don't. my car is currently at the shop being looked at. i'd like to know some possibilities of the problem before i get screwed and pay way too much . please help me!

My initial thought is that perhaps your water pump failed and the belt came off because of it. Reason: the warning light (cooling system), the symptom (smoke under hood, wheel locked up). If the water pump was bad enough or leaked badly enough, the belt could come off rendering your power steering inoperative.

I hope and pray that your concern did not damage the engine any further - sometimes all it takes is a good overheating to cause major damage. Good luck.
