Not sure why it got hot -- could it be a cylinder head gasket that has failed? Maybe as a result of the overheating. If so, starting the engine could be difficult.
Have you verified the timing belt is intact?
Kind of a wide open diagnosis at this point - basic testing needs to be done and then a conclusion can be reached.

It might have a crack cylinder head mine has a crack but doesn't overheat. I put liquid gasket on the crack.
