If you are hearing back firing if it is in the intake it's usually a sign of a lean fuel condition, back firing in the exhaust could be a sign of a rich fuel condition or fuel being burned in the exhaust. Not to worry you but that year range had head gasket problems, are you loosing coolant or is the engine running hot? Is there a Check Engine light on? If so a scan tool would indicate where the problem lays. It's important to check the basics, compression, check valve clearances replace spark plugs and fuel filter.
