Question: can the fuel sensor be replaced or do you have to replace the whole fuel pump?

about 4 months ago my check engine light came on. had it checked and was told it was either the fuel level sensor of pump. had it checked at pepboys a monthe ago and was told the fuel flap was open and it was very expensive to repair. my car has four wheel drive.

    the evle guage can be replaced separetly. i have done several of these for the same code. not cheap.
