check engine light is on. starts flashing at above 55mph using a/c or cruise control. dealership says need to replace catalytic converter and mass air flow sensor. Can the failure of the mass air flow sensor cause the catalytic converter to need replacement? Is $1400 reasonable for these repair works?

The short answer is yes. But $1400 is way too much. I would try replacing the mass air flow unit, clear the codes and run the truck, if you get lucky maybe the light won't come back on. In any case I would look for an independent shop to use instead of the dealer.

I agree with Pvt-Public maybe it will clear the code once the mass airflow sensor is replaced but if not, you can view Catalytic replacement prices here www.repairpal.com/estimator
