1995 Mitsubishi Montero Question: Can I safely operate if I remove transfer case?

 Rookie

Summary says it all. Transfer case is making lots of noise, but I don't need 4x4 right now. Can I continue to use my truck if I remove the transfer case, and probably the front drive shaft?

    I wouldn't think so. Pehaps remove the complete transmission and putting in a 2WD but then the electrics are different and the labor and cost involved would not be prudent to undertake. Unfortunately its best to repair you transfer case. Perhaps remove the front driveshaft to lessen the load on the transfer case but the longer you drive the more the components in the transfer box will grind up and do damage.
