Air conditioning systems have a high proportion of unsatisfactory repairs. Even to solder the evaporator pipe the system would have to be evacuated repaired and then tested for leaks. The refrigerant molecules are small and any leak will result in system failure quickly. Call around and find a shop that specialize in AC repairs and get another quote. Replacement alone of the evaporator is 6.6 hours labor, add cost of all associated parts and evac and recharge.
