How much does it cost to fix this? Defroster when it broke made a horrible thumping sound...now it doesn't work at all, except when you put the fan in very high it makes that horrible thumping sound.

Cost to repair would depend on what is broken. But the good news and first place to start is remove the fan blower motor and inspect it for damage often debris gets into the heater housing (mice build nests in it). The heater blower motor is under the dash toward the door, piece of round black plastic about 6 inches in diameter three screws holding it up a two wire connector attached to it. Remove it it will take ten minutes and inspect it. If it broken look at www.roclkauto.com or go to your local Napa store to get a new part.
There is a company that independent auto repair shops "buy" their information from that the same information inexpensively to do it yourselfers. The information is year make and model specific repair procedures, service bulletins, component locations, wiring diagrams ect.... Alldata is very easy to navigate http://bit.ly/AllData_Repair_Manuals_Online
