When a mechanic says you need new brakes and rotors, but you haven't heard or felt anything strange about brake performance how reliable is that recommendation? I can understand new pads, but rotors too? Is there a way to check my own rotors and pads? Thanks.

The rotors have legal limits of thickness assigned to them by the Department of Transportation. If the rotors are too thin to be machined or have worn beyond the minimum spec, then the rotors need to be replaced. Most shops/mechanics will explain this, so I would ask your shop to do the same and show you the specs etc. That is what I always do.
