Question
I took my car to Sears for a free brake inspection. They told me I needed to have my front rotors re-surfaced. Would it make more sense for me to just replace the rotors instead of re-surfacing? And if so, should I also replace the pads if I do replace the rotors?
Answer #1
It depends how much meat the brake and rotors have, it all depends on the depth and if they are wearing equally if you have a lot of depth left i would just have the rotors resurface

If there is an issue with the steering wheel shaking when braking that would indicate an issue with the rotors. I don't recommend resurfacing rotors unless the brakes are worn to the point of replacement or there is a complaint of a steering wheel shaking when braking. Brake rotors will wear in over time with the brake pads and cause the rotor surface to become uneven and that's a normal occurrence. In a corrosive environment like Hawaii (salt corrosion) I would imagine the rotors have a fair amount of corrosion on them and in this case it might be more cost effective just to replace the rotors. That being said I wouldn't do anything unless the brakes were worn to the point of replacement or the steering wheel shook when braking.
