sounds like a brake light switch problem. the transfer of pwr in the switch turns on the brake lights and release your shift interlock solenoid. ck your fuses 1st and then pwr into your brake light switch

Wound up being just the brake light switch located at the pedal. The switch was just $20.00.Also if you ever get stuck the switgh has a little knob on it that when you turn it you can override the function allowing you to drive the car home and use your flashers as you still will not have brake lights.

Just had this problem on my 96 bird. They replaced the brake light switch and my whole turnsignal switch. Problem is solved. Don't know if the turnsignal had anything to do with it. All is good now.
