For Models: BMW 525i, BMW 530i, BMW 545i, BMW 645Ci

Engine, July 5, 2004

RepairPal Expert Overview:

A circular retention clip at the quick-release fuel line coupling was inadvertently not installed. In the event of a severe frontal crash, the quick release coupling could separate, causing fuel leakage. Any fuel leak always increases the risk of a fire. Dealers will install a retention clip at the quick-release coupling on the fuel supply line. The recall began on July 5, 2004.

For Models: BMW Z4

Body, Interior & Misc., June 11, 2004

RepairPal Expert Overview:

On 51 vehicles, some electronic airbag system processors may not be compatible, which may cause the airbags not to deploy if they are needed in a crash. Dealers will inspect and replace the air bag system processors if needed. The recall began June 11, 2004.

For Models: BMW 528i, BMW 540i

Suspension & Steering, May 17, 2004

Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, DUE TO LONG EXPOSURES TO CERTAIN ENVIRONMENTAL AND OPERATING CONDITIONS, THE MATERIAL STRUCTURE OF THE FRONT SPRING STRUT PLATE COULD BE AFFECTED. IN SOME CASES, THE STRUT PLATE COULD BEGIN TO CRACK, AND EVENTUALLY IT COULD BREAK. IF THIS OCCURRED, THE PLATE COULD CONTACT THE TIRE.

For Models: BMW Z4

Engine, May 11, 2004

RepairPal Expert Overview:

In certain environmental conditions, the fuel pump may vapor lock, causing the engine to stall. If this were to happen while moving, the driver would not be able to maintain speed or accelerate, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will install a resistor in the electrical line powering the fuel pump in order to prevent  an occurrence of vapor lock. The recall began May 11, 2004.

For Models: BMW 525i, BMW 530i, BMW 540i, BMW M5

Body, Interior & Misc., November 10, 2003

Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, A MICROPROCESSOR IN THE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE, WHICH ACTIVATES THE FRONT AIR BAGS, THE SIDE AIR BAGS, THE FRONT SEAT SAFETY BELT PRETENSIONERS, AND THE BATTERY SAFETY TERMINAL, MAY HAVE A MALFUNCTION THAT COULD LEAD TO AN UNINTENDED ACTIVATION OF ONE OR MORE OF THESE COMPONENTS.

For Models: BMW X5

Drive Train, November 10, 2003

RepairPal Expert Overview:

On certain vehicles, the bolts that secure the front differential, right output housing flange at the engine, and the right-hand engine support, may have been insufficiently tightened during vehicle assembly. With prolonged driving, these bolts could become loose and cause damage to the engine and transmission housings. The right output shaft could become disconnected, affecting the ability to control the vehicle, which could result in a crash. Dealers will inspect and retighten the affected drivetrain fasteners. The recall began on November 28, 2003.

For Models: BMW 745Li, BMW 745i, BMW 760Li

Engine, September 12, 2003

RepairPal Expert Overview:

The engine oil filter drain plug may not be tightened to specification. This could lead to loosening of the drain plug, causing an initial spray of oil and then a leak. If enough oil drains, engine damage can result, and crash could result if the damage is severe enough. Dealers will inspect the torque of the oil filter drain plug, and tighten if necessary. The recall began September 12, 2003.

For Models: BMW Z4

Drive Train, July 14, 2003

RepairPal Expert Overview:

On 180 vehicles equipped 18 inch tires, a front tire may have been damaged during production, when it was mounted on the rim. This could lead to tire failure, which could increase the risk of a crash. Dealers will unseat the tire from the rim and inspect the tire for damage. If damage is found, the tire will be replaced. The recall began July 14, 2003.

For Models: BMW 745Li, BMW 745i

Engine, July 8, 2003

Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, DUE TO A SOFTWARE ERROR, A DESYNCHRONIZATION OF THE VALVETRONIC MOTORS FOR ENGINE BANKS I AND II MAY OCCUR. IF THIS OCCURS, THE ENGINE COULD STALL.

For Models: BMW X5

Brakes, June 23, 2003

RepairPal Expert Overview:

A brake line may be too close to the steering shaft, which may allow the brake line to contact the shaft and eventually suffer damage and corrosion. A loss of brake fluid would illuminate the warning light as well as increase stopping distance, which could lead to a crash. Dealers will inspect the distance between the brake line and steering shaft joint, and increase the distance if needed. The recall began June 23, 2003.
