The windshield is bonded to its framework, not only creating a watertight seal, but contributing to the structural integrity of the roof. 210 vehicles were assembled with insufficient bonding in the upper right area of the windshield. In the event of a roll over type crash, the stability of the roof could be affected, increasing the risk of injury. Dealers will remove and reinstall the windshield and re-install it with the proper bonding to correct this concern.
An incorrect crimp connector may have been installed on the side air bag and belt tensioner wiring. There may be insufficient contact in the wiring, creating high resistance. This condition may cause the side air bag and/or safety belt tensioner not to deploy if needed in a crash, which increases the risk of injury. Dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge. The rear disc brake rotors may not have been manufactured to the proper specifications and in extreme cases, one or both rotors may break resulting in a loss of braking ability at that wheel, increasing stoping distances and the risk of a crash. Dealers will inspect the rear brake discs and replace them as necessary.
A defective crimp connector can cause increased electrical resistance in the seat belt tensioner wiring. Increased resistance in the wiring could cause the belt tensioner not to deploy in the event of a crash. If the belt tensioner does not deploy in a crash, injury could result. The belt tensioner wiring will be repaired free of charge. The recall began September 5, 2009.
BMW is recalling 2008–2009 M3 passenger vehicles with the optional double clutch transmission. When rapid vehicle deceleration occurs, the transmission software may perform a multistage downshift, which can cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will reprogram the engine and transmission ECU with updated software free of charge.
A static discharge from the fuel rails may affect the engine electronic control unit (ECU) and stall the engine in weather below freezing combined with low humidity. If the engine stalls, the driver may not be able to maintain speed or accelerate, and the power steering could fail, increasing the risk of a crash. The switch in the brake fluid reservoir cap to activate the brake warning lamp for low fluid levels may not work at high temperatures. If this happens, a loss of the hydraulic brake system may cause increased stopping distances, which could result in a crash. Dealers will replace the brake fluid reservoir cap free of charge. The recall began September 20, 2007.
Certain aftermarket BMW bike carriers, P/N 82110393954, sold for use on 2005 BMW X3 and X5 vehicles. A pinch bolt exists between the bike arm bracket and the upright assembly of the hitch style bicycle rack. When moving the bike arm bracket to its down position, the pinch point has the potential of causing severe injury to the users finger or hand. BMW will provide a repair kit and instructions on repair. The campaign # is 07E069000
The front passenger seat sensor, which detects a child seat or adult in the seat, may recognize a small adult as a child seat. If this happens and the front passenger air bag is deactivated, the risk of injury in a crash may be increased. Dealers will replace the front passenger seat sensor. The recall began May 21, 2007.
On 25 vehicles, the bolt securing the front control arm and swivel bearing were not tightened to specification and could loosen over time. If the nuts loosen, vehicle handling and control could be compromised, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will tighten the front control arm and swivel bearing connection to the correct specifications. The recall began November 21, 2006.
