The front driveshaft attachment bolts may not have been tightened to specification and could become loose. This could lead to a loss of power to the front wheels and ultimately a vehicle breakdown, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the front driveshaft attachment bolts to correct this concern.

The diesel fuel filter heater, which is used to warm the fuel at low temperatures, could experience an electrical overload condition and become permanently activated. The heater could remain active even when the ignition is off, which can lead to a dead battery. The unit itself could also overheat, increasing the risk of a fire. Dealers will replace the fuel filter heater to correct this concern.

On vehicles equipped with a diesel engine, the drive belt tensioner may have been manufactured incorrectly; the welds in the tensioner may crack. Over time, this could lead to failure of the tensioner. Belt tensioner failure could result in the sudden loss of power steering assist, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the engine drive belt tensioner to correct this concern. This recall is scheduled to begin during June of 2011.

BMW is recalling 2011 X5 and X6 SAV models for failing to comply with federal safety standards on tire selection and rims. Affected models are equipped with 20-inch wheels, yet the label states the vehicles have 19-inch wheels. This can lead to incorrect tire inflation, which can affect handling and increase the risk of a crash. Dealers will mail the correct labels to the customer or install the label free of charge.

BMW is recalling 2010 X5 M SAV models for failing to comply with federal safety standards on lamps and reflective devices. The side marker lamps do not illuminate because the vehicles were not equipped with the power supply cables leading to the lamps. BMW will install the power supply cables free of charge.

The windshield is bonded to its framework, not only creating a watertight seal, but contributing to the structural integrity of the roof. 210 vehicles were assembled with insufficient bonding in the upper right area of the windshield. In the event of a roll over type crash, the stability of the roof could be affected, increasing the risk of injury. Dealers will remove and reinstall the windshield and re-install it with the proper bonding to correct this concern.

An incorrect crimp connector may have been installed on the side air bag and belt tensioner wiring. There may be insufficient contact in the wiring, creating high resistance. This condition may cause the side air bag and/or safety belt tensioner not to deploy if needed in a crash, which increases the risk of injury. Dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge. The recall began September 16, 2009.
