Certain 2012 X5 models equipped with a diesel engine, and a number of 2013 X5 and X6 models, may develop a power steering fluid leak from the steering gear. This leak is due to a machining error on the steering gear. Leaking power steering fluid can spray onto hot exhaust parts, increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire. Dealers will inspect and replace the steering gear as necessary on affected vehicles.
On certain vehicles, when extended to their highest position, the front seat head restraints exceed the allowable downward movement limit of 25mm, as determined by federal safety regulations. In the event of a crash, the head restraint may unexpectedly move down slightly if it was adjusted to the fully extended position, increasing the risk of personal injury. Dealers will attach a clamp to the front seat head restraint posts to correct this concern.
Vehicles equipped with an 8 or 12 cylinder turbocharged engine may overheat the circuit board for the auxiliary water pump. This could lead to smoldering of the pump or an engine compartment or vehicle fire. Dealers will replace the auxiliary water pump to correct this concern.
The insulated connector for the positive battery cable may have been incorrectly attached to the trunk floor panel, which can lead to a loosening of the bolt connection. Loosening of the connection can cause an increase in electrical resistance and overheating of the cable connection, which could lead to a fire, even when the vehicle is not in use. As a precaution, owners are advised to park outside until the remedy has been completed. Dealers will secure the battery bolt cable connection as necessary to correct this concern.
Due to a manufacturing error, six vehicles may have a condition where the engagement of the transmission's parking lock may not occur when the shifter is in the "P" position. In this situation, if the parking brake is not applied, the vehicle could roll unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the automatic transmission to correct this concern.
On vehicles equipped with an 8 or 12 cylinder turbocharged engine, the circuit board for the electric water pump may overheat. This could lead to smoldering of the pump and/or an electrical fire in the engine compartment. Dealers will replace the auxiliary water pump to correct this concern.
The front driveshaft attachment bolts may not have been tightened to specification and could become loose. This could lead to a loss of power to the front wheels and ultimately a vehicle breakdown, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the front driveshaft attachment bolts to correct this concern.
High resistance in the electrical contacts may cause one or more of the rear lights to stop working. Intermittent light operation reduces the ability to warn other motorists of the driver's intentions, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will repair the affected vehicles as necessary to correct this concern.
The diesel fuel filter heater, which is used to warm the fuel at low temperatures, could experience an electrical overload condition and become permanently activated. The heater could remain active even when the ignition is off, which can lead to a dead battery. The unit itself could also overheat, increasing the risk of a fire. Dealers will replace the fuel filter heater to correct this concern.
Fifty vehicles may have a control module in the electric power steering (EPS) unit that could malfunction, resulting in a sudden loss of power steering assistance. Sudden loss of power steering assistance could increase the risk of a crash. Dealers will perform the repairs necessary to correct this concern. This recall is expected to begin during July of 2011.
