Airbags use a chemical reaction contained in an inflator module to create the pressure necessary to inflate the bags when deployment is required. These vehicles are being recalled because the front passenger airbag inflator may produce excessive internal pressure when deployed. As a result, the inflator module could rupture, causing metal fragments to strike vehicle occupants. Dealers will inspect and replace any defective passenger front airbag inflator modules found.
All modern vehicles use some type of power assist for the braking system. The 8 cylinder models being recalled use a vacuum pump, connected to the power booster by a vacuum hose, to provide the necessary assist. The vacuum pump may leak a small amount of lubricating oil into the vacuum hose and this contamination could result in a loss of power assist, leading to increased stopping distances. Dealers will correct this concern by replacing the brake vacuum line with an improved version.
The vehicle battery is connected to the fuse box via a heavy duty cable. It has been determined that the cable connection at the fuse box can degrade over time, resulting in increased electrical resistance. This increased resistance can cause the connection point to overheat and break, resulting in a loss of electrical power and causing the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the positive battery cable connector and secure it with an improved method to correct this concern.
The engine drive belt has a device called an idler pulley that helps to keep the belt properly aligned with the power steering pump. The bolt that secures the idler pulley may come loose, causing the drive belt to fall off and power steering assist will be lost. If this occurs, you will still be able to steer your vehicle, it will just take much more effort. Your BMW dealer will replace and properly tighten the idler pulley bolt.
Certain vehicles equipped with both the Comfort Access and Soft Close Door options are being recalled. Due to a software problem, the doors may appear to be closed and latched, but may not be. A door may unexpectedly open due to road or driving conditions or occupant contact with the door. The sudden opening may result in occupant ejection or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash. Dealers will update the vehicle software as necessary to correct this concern.
The affected vehicles have an electronic key and an electronic connection between the gear shifter and the transmission (shift-by-wire) that automatically shifts the transmission to Park when the driver presses the Start/Stop button to shutdown the engine. If the driver presses the engine Start/Stop button 2 or 3 times within a short time interval, the system may shift the transmission to Neutral rather than Park.
If the driver exits the vehicle with the transmission in Neutral and the parking brake is not applied, the vehicle may roll away. Unattended rollaway incidents often result in a crash or cause injury to pedestrians in the path of the vehicle. Vehicle owners will be notified, but the revised software remedy will not be available until March 2013.
Due to a manufacturing process error, the oil pump driveshaft could separate from the pump rotor. Separation of the pump's rotor could lead to a sudden loss of oil pressure causing the possibility of complete engine failure, resulting in an engine stall-like condition, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Dealers will replace the engine oil pump to correct this concern.
Fluctuation of the electrical current within the electric power steering assist system can occur. This can lead to sudden loss of power steering assist, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the steering assistance module on affected vehicles to correct this concern.
Certain 2012 X5 models equipped with a diesel engine, and a number of 2013 X5 and X6 models, may develop a power steering fluid leak from the steering gear. This leak is due to a machining error on the steering gear. Leaking power steering fluid can spray onto hot exhaust parts, increasing the risk of an engine compartment fire. Dealers will inspect and replace the steering gear as necessary on affected vehicles.
On certain vehicles, when extended to their highest position, the front seat head restraints exceed the allowable downward movement limit of 25mm, as determined by federal safety regulations. In the event of a crash, the head restraint may unexpectedly move down slightly if it was adjusted to the fully extended position, increasing the risk of personal injury. Dealers will attach a clamp to the front seat head restraint posts to correct this concern.
