BMW X5 xDrive Recall 12V019000

The Automatic Transmission Park Lock May Not Engage Properly

Drive Train, January 20, 2012

RepairPal Expert Overview

Our Quick Take:

On six automatic transmission equipped vehicles, the transmission's parking lock may not function when the shifter is in the "P" position.

What Should You Do?

BMW will notify owners of affected vehicles beginning February 2, 2012. If you experience the vehicle rolling while in "Park," or you don't receive notification and you feel you should have, please contact your dealer. It’s helpful to have your vehicle identification number (VIN) handy when you call.

Summary:

Due to a manufacturing error, six vehicles may have a condition where the engagement of the transmission's parking lock may not occur when the shifter is in the "P" position. In this situation, if the parking brake is not applied, the vehicle could roll unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the automatic transmission to correct this concern.
