BMW X5 Recall 07V391000
Brake Fluid Warning Light May Not Work
There may be a problem with the brake fluid reservoir cap that causes the brake warning lamp not to work when brake fluid is low. If this happens, a loss of the hydraulic brake system may cause increased stopping distances, which could result in a crash.
We at RepairPal have designated this a high priority recall; the brake warning light may not work. Please contact your BMW dealer. They will check to see if your specific vehicle is affected and advise you on what to do next. Always have your vehicle identification number (VIN) handy when you call.
The switch in the brake fluid reservoir cap to activate the brake warning lamp for low fluid levels may not work at high temperatures. If this happens, a loss of the hydraulic brake system may cause increased stopping distances, which could result in a crash. Dealers will replace the brake fluid reservoir cap free of charge. The recall began September 20, 2007.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 135, "PASSENGER CAR BRAKE SYSTEMS." THE CAP OF THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR HAS BEEN DESIGNED IN ORDER TO RECOGNIZE A LOW FLUID LEVEL OF THE HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM BY TRIGGERING A RED WARNING LAMP IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. A SWITCH THAT IS ATTACHED TO THIS CAP COULD MALFUNCTION AT HIGH TEMPERATURES.
IF THIS HAPPENED, THE RED WARNING LAMP IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WOULD NOT BE ACTIVATED. LOSS OF THE HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM MAY CAUSE INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCES WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR CAP FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 20, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.
