BMW Maintenance Procedures - Common Additional Services
The air filter accumulates dust and debris and should be replaced to protect the engine and maximize fuel economy. For optimal engine performance and longevity, replace every 1 year or 15,000 miles.
Automatic transmission fluid becomes heat fatigued and accumulates moisture over time which can lead to automatic transmission damage if not serviced regularly. It should be replaced every 2 years or 30,000 miles.
Brake fluid accumulates moisture and contamination from component wear over time and unless replaced every 30,000 miles or 2 years, can cause brake system damage.
Engine coolant breaks down, gets rusty and becomes contaminated with debris from component wear over time and can cause engine or cooling system damage if not replaced every 2 years or 30,0000 miles.
Differential fluid breaks down and becomes contaminated with moisture over time and can lead to differential damage from a lack of proper lubrication. It should be replaced every 2 years or 30,000 miles.
The Fuel Filter becomes restricted as it accumulates debris from filtering the fuel which, can lead to performance problems and early fuel pump failure. It should be replaced at the mileage interval recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
It is important to rotate the tires from front to rear every 5000-7500 miles so that they wear evenly. This may not be possible on some vehicles because of directional tread design or rim size differences.

I am about to buy a 2001 BMW 530i for $9,500 with 95,000 miles. It has been serviced by a BMW main dealer and I just got a copy of the service records from the dealer listing what has been done over the last few years. The current owner spends between $2,000 and $2,800 on average, on maintenance every year, so far the following work has been done and on these years: External Temp Senors (2010)

I'm thinking of buying a BMW X5 with 100k to 120k miles. What do you think? My last car (not a BMW) lasted 225k miles with little to no maintenance (regular oil changes, kept up on the routine stuff and had a great "roadside" mechanic) - What do you think the average life of the X5 is? Can they easily get to 200k miles or will repairs get to frequent/expensive? - Can a non BMW authorized mechanic do a good job on BMWs? He is a generalist (lots of Honda, Toyota, and American car expe... |

Are brake pads / rotors on a distance- or time-based maintenance frequency? Is there a sensor that measures the pad thickness? Or do I just wait until I hear noises? |
