Great experience and they are very willing to take the time with a novice explaining everything.

by - Verified Customer June 02, 2015

My car is a 2003 model, with only 64000 miles, which I had been taking to the dealer for service. I felt I was paying too much, and that they would much rather sell me a new car than fix my car. In fact, I was beginning to believe I needed a new car. Everyone I interacted with at BMW Excluservice was professional, personable and informative. They treated me as a truly valued customer, and they resolved my problem quickly. Issues that I had been "counseled" about by the dealership, were not issues at all, and I fell in love with my car again. I finally feel that I have found reliable service for my car that I can trust.

Excluservice quoted $1200 for an a/c compressor that I can buy for $683 at a local BMW dealership. This is the second time I've stopped using their service, for the same reason...ridiculous prices for some parts. I chose not to have the work performed.

Reply from BMW Excluservice – by BMWExcluservice April 30, 2015

Dear Mr. Miller,

I am terribly sorry you were not satisfied with the estimate we provided you, keep in mind our price is an installed price. The person at the dealer gave you an over the counter price. If you were to have the dealer install this part it would be at a considerably higher price. If you contact their service department they will verify this. Therefore the overall installed price would be less if done through us. We also provide a 3 year 36k miles warranty on our repairs, the dealer only provides a maximum of 2 years.
I hope this helps clear this up.

Kind regards,

Stephane.

So white smoke means steam i.e. water, Black smoke is gas, blue smoke is oil. Are you sure the smoke isn't blue? Valve stem seals would be blue smoke. I would check the intake manifold for signs of oil residue by removing the throttle body first. If there's some oil reside I would check the oil separator/crankcase breather system on the back of the manifold. If the valve stem seals are leaking you can either live with the smoke or get rid of the car as the repair would cost more than the value of the car.

You probably only smell it when you park because that is when you are outside the car when it has been driven. Unless you are smelling it inside the cabin. You most likely have an oil leak, possibly a valve cover gasket causing oil to leak onto the exhaust manifold. Or possibly a oil filter housing gasket. If the level is good (i.e. topped off when the engine is cold) and the light remains on you may have a defective coolant level sensor. Some E46's have the coolant level sensor built into the coolant reservoir and some are at the bottom or side of the reservoir and can be replaced separately. Check it by unplugging the sensor wire from your reservoir and connect it to that of an empty known working one and flip it upside down. If the light goes out there's your answer.

The Body Control Module may have an effect on the Heating...the most likely problem is a faulty auxiliary waterpump/heater valve. Without looking at the car I am going to guess that you have a locked up brake caliper. You can confirm this easily. After you drive and you start to feel the vibration pull over in a safe place and check to see if one wheel is a lot hotter than any other. (DON'T TOUCH THE BRAKES!!!) You will burn yourself. Just put the back of your hand about 6" away from the wheel and you will feel the heat radiating from the brakes. Let me know if this helps!

When this occurs do you see any warning indicators? If not than you may have activated your speed limit warning indicator. Go into the vehicle setting in your "I" drive and turn the feature off. If not it could be the low temperature warning light. When the outside temp reaches 37 degrees a gong will go off letting you know that roads may be frozen. Given that we aren't in winter yet I doubt this is your issue.

Good luck!

Greetings,

Well there are a lot of possibilities than can cause that symptom and without hearing it...it is almost impossible to determine the exact source. That being said...the most common causes of the noises you are hearing could be related to one or more of your lifters, could be sticking. If that is the case you should take it to a local BMW specialty shop. I am sure repair pal can recommend one. So this could be audibly verified. They may need to remove the valve cover to visually inspect it.

I am assuming you have an old analog cell phone in your center console/armrest. The best advice I can give you is to find the power source to it or fuse and unplug it. Any BMW Specialty shop can do it for a very minimal fee (no more than 0.5 hrs. of labor if any at all) Keep in mind this is not uninstalling it just removing the power that runs it. Greetings,

Unless your battery is just dead...you most likely have some kind of power drain. On the E39 chassis a common source of battery drain is the final stage resistor....A final stage resistor can fail in many different ways...typical signs of failure are: Fan (for the a/c and heat) running constantly even with the ignition switch/key turned off (this will drain the battery if the fan runs all night), or the fan being very erratic and not moving at the same speed that you have it set for, to it having a complete mind of it's own and just coming on off randomly at different speeds.

William,
Unfortunately there isn't a simple answer, the problem needs to be diagnosed by a shop/technician who has the knowledge to properly and efficiently diagnose the issue. Modern cars have all kinds of control modules, sensors, switches and relays that can lead to these symptoms.

I am sorry I couldn't provide you with a definitive answer for your particular concern, I think you will find that it will cost you less in the long run to have it properly diagnosed rather than replacing expensive parts until you resolve the issue.

The price to replace your leaking valve cover gasket is $677.10 + tax and shop supply fees = Roughly $765.12
This includes the gasket, labor, cleaning solvent to clean the oil residue caused by the leak.
We provide a 3year 36,000 miles warranty on the repair.
Sometimes the aluminium bolts shear and that would cause the price to go up, we would not know until we start the repair if additional labor and or parts may be needed.

Greetings,

Alternators don't typically drain battery power. If alternator is faulty it may not provide enough voltage to charge the battery. Why would you put a more powerful alternator? and without inspecting the vehicle it is impossible to tell if the wiring harness would need to be replaced or repairable if that is even the problem.

You should take the car to another repair shop to have a second opinion. Expect to pay someone for diagnosis as someone will need to spend a considerable amount of time to troubleshoot this concern.

Groaning noise when turning corners
Many things can cause the noise you are describing, we would need to have a technician drive the car and then put it up on the lift to determine the source of the noise for you.

You can contact us at 301-231-5400 or visit our website www.bmwexcluservice.com to set up an appointment.

The down side of a polished surface is that it needs to be constantly maintained, cleaned, waxed etc... as the metal surface is bare and exposed metal will corrode. What we've done is have the wheels polished and then apply a clear coat over the whole surface. This in time may peel and it would need to be redone, but it's a lot less hassle than to keep them clean and waxed.

I hope this helps.

Greetings,

There isn't enough information to provide an estimate for you. We would need to have you bring in the vehicle for us to diagnose it to determine which of the four oxygen sensors are bad if that is even what is wrong with the car. My suggestion is to set up an appointment so we can run some test to determine the failure and once we've done this we will be able to provide an estimate for you.

Greetings,

This is a very common issue with the N62 engine. It is most likely from leaking valve stem guide seals. The typical fix was to replace the valve stem guide seals by removing the cylinder head. I've seen dealers quote in the neighborhood of $10k+ to do this job. We have a way where we can do it without removing the cylinder head, thus reducing the cost of repair significantly. We would need to inspect the vehicle first to determine if the symptoms are from the valve stem seals or the oil separator. Give us a call and set up an appointment.

Greetings,

These symptoms you are describing could be a myriad of things. An engine needs three things to run, fuel, air and spark all at the right amounts and the right time. Now the problem is determining which one of those is the source of the problem. The best thing to do is to bring your car to a reputable shop that can perform tests to determine the source of the failure.

On this car you need to check the "Check Control Panel" it will tell you what the problem is, once you've pushed the "Check" button the warning in the gauge cluster will go out.

If you need help with this bring it by the shop.

There is a good chance that moisture has gotten to the parts that allow the glass to side. This moisture may have frozen so yes it is quite common that windows may not function in cold weather. Don't force it either because the window regulators on these are mostly made of plastic bits and they will break.

Hope your windows worked after it warmed up.

Find a qualified technician to diagnose the ABS/Traction control system. If the system doesn't recognize that the wheels are turning it will not be able to determine the vehicle speed and therefore the traction control system will not function.

If you could let us know what is wrong with the A/C system we would be happy to help you determine a cost to repair. The problem needs to be diagnosed first, check fuses, check to see if there is any refrigerant in the system and if the system is empty you should find out why. A/C refrigerant is not a consumable, and should never have to be topped off. If it is low it means there's a leak and to determine where the leak is you need to have a evacuate and recharge job performed on the car. The regular consumer will not have the capability to perform this test...only a qualified shop/technician with the proper equipment can.

I suspect the reason why the technicians could not see this leak before is if the prior leak was above this leak and therefore leaking on to this area there would be no way for them to see it...Gravity will cause fluid to run down and wind will cause fluid to flow from the front to the rear of the car. If you are not comfortable with the diagnosis of this shop, by all means get a second opinion. I don't think i'd recommend the dealer but maybe a shop in your area who specializes in VW/Audi. Repair pal has such a tool to help you find a specialty shop in your area.

Good luck!
What could be causing this?
The only reason condensation would build up inside the car is because you have moisture in the car. Find the source of your leak and dry out the interior. It could also be a wet jacket, clothing or gloves that are left in the car?
There's really no good answer....P0404 is an EGR fault...a typical shop should start by 1.0hr of labor. Once that hour of labor has expired they may have a better Idea of where to go next and therefore how much more labor if any is needed for troubleshooting and running tests.
