NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 08V384000

NHTSA Action Number: EA08001

DEPENDING ON THE MANNER AND FREQUENCY OF THE FRONT PASSENGER'S ENTRY AND EXIT, SMALL CRACKS HAVE DEVELOPED IN THE MAT. IF THIS OCCURS, THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAGS, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE HEAD PROTECTION SYSTEM, WILL BE DEACTIVATED AND THE AIR BAG WARNING LAMP AS WELL AS THE PASSENGER AIR BAG "ON-OFF" LAMP WILL BE ILLUMINATED.

Consequence: IN THIS SITUATION THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY EVEN IF A SUFFICIENTLY SEVERE ACCIDENT WOULD OCCUR AND OCCUPANT PROTECTION PROVIDED BY THE SYSTEM WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REWORK THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR MAT SO THAT EXTERNAL FORCE APPLICATION TO THE SEAT DOES NOT CAUSE A CRACK TO THE MAT. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING LATE SEPTEMBER 2008. BMW WILL ALSO EXTEND THE WARRANTY ON THESE VEHICLES TO 10 YEARS FROM FIRST REGISTRATION WITHOUT ANY MILEAGE LIMIT. We have a 2006 BMW X3 with that this problem. Sometimes the light satys on for a long time maybe half hour before it goes out. I did not know about this recall since I bought the SAV from the original owner. But i have been to the dealership a couple of times and never heard of it. I don't know if I should go and claim this recall. ken ramos

I took my 2005 BMW X3 to the dealership YESTERDAY for a diagnostic test to list all of the work that needed to be done since it's been off of the extended warranty for a few months now. One of the issues was the passenger side sensor/seat belt light always stayed on. The dealership wanted $1,255.00 to replace the front passenger side seat mat sensor. (BTW, this was the most expensive charge listed). Imagine my surprise when I find this website and the recall information that was never sent to me or discussed - neither by the the dealership nor by BMW of North America. I called the dealership TODAY and the service tech said that I wasn't covered, but then he put me on hold and checked with someone else who must have said said otherwise. I don't know if it's incompetence or dishonesty, but I don't appreciate the fact that NO ONE at BMW mentioned the recall. I was the one who did the research and I was the one who had to push the issue... Needless to say, I'm taking my vehicle in tomorrow to have the issue corrected. As for the other problems listed, I will be taking my BMW to an independent auto mechanic for service. My advice is to print out this information and go to dealership with it. If you don't mention it, I'm guessing that they won't... At least that was how it worked in my case-

My 2006 530xi is doing this. It was produced in December of 2005 and is not covered because the recall only goes to November 22. Seems like this needs to be evaluated again.

My wife has a 2006 X3, which for several months had been showing, intermittently, the warning icons for the vehicle's air bags. At first, the service rep at the dealership told me that there would be a small charge (less than 60 dollars) for the fix because the X3 was still under an extended service warranty; later, when we came to pick up the SAV, he told us that there would be no charge. The problem was fixed, he reported, with the replacement of the seat mat. Not once did he mention that there had been a recall, nor was I ever contacted by BMW about this airbag problem! My only knowledge about the recall hss come from visiting this website. Oh, by the way, the service rep did strongly advise us that the X3 was in dire need of new brakes and tires--all to the tune of $3300! "No thanks," I said. (The tires still had deep grooves. And I'm going to run the pads down to the rotors, since the rotors are customarily replaced anyway, whether they've been scored or not.) Since the repair was free, I guess the dealership still wanted to get something out of us. Can't fault 'em for trying, huh.
