My column gear shift would not work. Owners manual explained how to diagnose. Brake lights aren't working due to blown fuse. When attempting to replace the fuse. The new fuse sparks slightly and than get's real hot. It melts the silver plug in area of the fuse. What could be causing this?

first of all, you are using the wrong fuse and could damage the wiring harness. the fuse should blow before getting hot. do not use a fuse rated higher than required.probably have a short somewhere in the system. check the brake light switch connector for wires laying against the frame. otherwise you need a shop to track it down..
