The 98 Escort is pretty straight forward after doing repairs to the cooling system refill the cooling system with a 50/50 mix of fresh antifreeze and continue putting the coolant in until the radiator is full, open the heater valve to full hot so that coolant can circulate in the full cooling system, squeeze the lower radiator hose to try to purge air out of the cooling system, replace the radiator cap and start the engine, run the engine for a minute it will not have reached operating temperature, switch the engine off remove radiator cap and top up coolant as required, then run the engine until the electric fan comes in, allow car to col down, top up coolant level again and drive the cat noting running temerature.
