battery alternator or starter on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

My battery had corrosion on the posts and cables-- I cleaned with baking soda. tried to crank again and it keeps trying to turn over, actually cranked once and ran for about 5 seconds and then stopped, lights come on inside and out. could it be as simple as a dead battery or is it more likely the alternator. i believe i can take the battery to an auto parts store and have it tested. would you suggest i do that before i have it towed to a shop

Have you tried a jump start? That would tell you that the problem is the battery, if the car starts, and then you could drive to have the battery tested and replace it if it won't hold a charge. If you can't start even with a jump, then it's time to go in to a shop.
