if battery is cracked by post is it still safe to use?

MasterChange it asap. Vented gasses at that point are highly explosive and corrosion from the acid will start to attack near components.

MasterMake sure battery is properly secured and the hold down bracket is in place. Perhaps that is the reason the battery casing cracked.
