Question: Batter Vent Tube

Replacing the battery on a 1998 Mercury Mystique I noticed what looks like a vacuum line attached to a 8''x8'' box under the battery platform. The other end of this vacuum line is not connected to anything. I connected this tube to a 1 inch vent tube on the side of the new RayOVac battery - the previous battery didn't have a vent tube.
Should I have done this?

I don't think so. the box and rubber line are probably part of the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system. the vent on the battery is supposed to go to atmosphere, and only needs to be connected to a vent line in a car which has an internal battery area, like a car that has the battery in the floor or the trunk. Your car has the battery under the hood, right? Better to pull that rubber line off the battery (let the battery vent to atmosphere) and find out where it's supposed to go and connect it there.
