Question
I am attempting to repair the hatch latch and need to remove the rear interior panel. I have the panel loose except for the plastic recessed panel where you can open the hatch from the inside. It appears that the trim is in two separate parts, but does not seem to want to pull apart and I am afraid I might break something. Any advice?

Order a new trim piece. The unfortunate part of that repair is there will be collateral damage to the panel pieces. Unless you keep your vehicle garaged in a climate controlled enviornment trhe latent heat the car is exposed to and age, the trim will become very brittle.

No you don't. Any dealer will be able to send the part in the mail. Be delicate with the removal. If you can get this handle warmed up you will be more successful.

Thanks Ken. I was able to remove the rear interior panel to access the latch mechanism. Everything seems to be in working order, except for a sping inside the latch. Apparently, the spring has come off and this is why the latch is not releasing. However, I can't seem to find where the spring connects. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Use a thin screwdriver. Slide it under the trim piece, and the bezel around the hatch will pop off. It's a bit tricky but once you hit the right spot it will come loose. The inner handle stays on the rear hatch.

Thak you very much! I tried what you suggested, but was afraid I'd break the trim piece. I'll keep working on it. I live in southwestern Montana and Volvo resources are scarce.
