When trying to accelerate, the car will not shift out of first and eventually, when the RPMs reach about 3500, the car basically shifts into neutral. As the car slows, first gear reengages and repeats.

I'm afraid the first thing that has to be done is scan the transmission computer to see if there are issues with the shift solenoids or wiring that prevent upshifting. You'll need a good shop to do this and I would hope the answer is a problem with the solenoids. If not, you'll be looking at replacing the transmission itself. Let us know if we can help.
