It is rare that I have any problem with Auto Japan. The only problem I had was confusion on a clerks part about pick up time. I wasn't called as promised.

They thoroughly explain problems and resolutions prior to work. Small and last minute "happenings" are repaired on the spot when possible. The wait room is comfortable with freshly brewed tea/coffee and 2 great dogs to make the wait like being at home in my living room - except I have cats!! For a single gal - I have total faith in what they tell me.

After having my brakes repaired, which was a fine experience, I asked for a 'check up' and maintenance that I had deferred for years. The verdict was that the car needed a new steering rack, valve cover replacement and change of brake and clutch fluid. This was to cost $1300. When I arrived, the 'check engine' light was on, and the owner charged me $100 to put his little reader on it. In the past, it had been attributed to the gas cap by Marin Mitsubishi, who offered to read it for free. The price was price had gone up to $1500 before repairs had even begun. I received a call about an hour later saying it needed a new throttle sensor for over $300 and a new spark plug wire. I told them no. I was mad that they hadn't checked the dang spark plugs in the first place...isn't that like 'B' of the ABCs of tune-up? The owner let his phone answering guy drive my car (can you spell 'liability'?) over to pick me up and he refused to get out of the driver seat of MY car for the ride back, so I rode as a passenger in my own car. An item in my car had been flung under the front seat, and I understood why on the drive back..he drove like a mad person on the way back to the shop, even honking at other drivers not once, but twice. I was mortified that someone I knew would see me in the car with this guy. The owner let me write him a check for over $1500 ( w brake job, he got nearly $2000 of my money) and drive away from his shop with my check engine light still on. He told me if it started blinking to pull over immediately! My trust in them was totally shattered. The car sounded really weird the next time I drove it...on the 1.5 hr drive over Hwy 175 ( winding, 2-lanes, sheer drop off the side). I was afraid to drive it home it sounded so strange. I drove to the only garage open on a Saturday and two men in Lakeport at Mackey Tire center drove my car, put it up on the hydraulic lift to check it, re-read the check engine light and then turned it off for me ALL FOR FREE! My jerk at Auto Japan couldn't do that for a customer who had just paid him nearly $2K. When the light came back on about a month later, I took it to Callagy Automotive. He checked the light (FREE again) and changed the spark plugs....it's been fine ever since. I will never go back to Auto Japan.
