excessive use of oil (4 1/2 quarts) after 5000 miles.Found ash deposits on cylinders all 4, scoring on cylinder walls and build up on intake valves. Could this weight oil have caused this damage and enough evidence to prove negligence in service ?oil used regularly 10w-30. recmmended 5-20

Would assume that Toyota is involved in the problem. The
factory spec is 5W20 (0W20 in cold climates) and also:

Use Toyota approved "Toyota Genuine Motor Oil" or equivalent to satisfy the following grade and viscosity.

As an independent shop, I'm always looking to make sure that the oil we put in meets factory specs. SOMEONE used
the wrong oil and chose to ignore published guidelines.
All oil is not the same and it is possible that this caused a problem.

How many miles on this engine? Do you have all the receipts? Did a quick lube install this oil?
    Or was this self inflicted?

Rav 4 has 106,000 mikes. problem began to reveal itself at 96,000. Finally brought it to dealer to find problem. This was a local foreign car shop. Has been in business for a number of years. Deals with toyota, subaru, hondas etc. Took care of my car from day 1. He filled out the maintence book each oil change and signed. I have all the receipts also. I would like to recover the damage. What do you think would be fair ?

The Toyota dealer likely offered you no assistance and they
really do not "owe" you anything. How about your foreign shop? What do they say about using 10W30 oil? And what brand oil were they using? What help have they offered??

thank you for your timely reply. After seeing the import garage he told me he had been using 5w30 oil. That is still not the recommended oil. would the difference be a cause of the problem? he said the report was rubbish and I have a defective engine. the oil was castro.
I feel i am up a creek without a paddle and will have know way of recovering any damages. I may have to look for a new car. what do you think about honda CRV or subaru outback newer models. reliable?
