Anyone else experience rear deck (back dash) degradation on the Honda Civic? on 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid

The interior rear deck (back dash) of our 2005 Honda Civic hybrid has been pitting over the last couple years (especially if you touch it with anything) and now the speaker screen is collapsing inward. This implies faulty material that can't withstand heat and cold but I don't know what to do about it. Has anyone else experienced this?

Okay - 2 years late - but maybe you'll see this. I just bought a 2005 HCH with a very badly degraded rear deck. The care came from CA and I was told it melted due to high heat. I'm having it replaced - but the weird thing is that yours is the only question I've found online about this. Even my Honda dealer isn't sure if they can do the install.

Thanks for the comment about your experience with the 2005 Honda Civic hybrid back dash. We have not heard from anyone else with similar issues and have not done anything with it although it looks ugly. It does not seem to have created any problems as the car still runs well (although we did need to replace the battery last year). Does yours look melted? Ours does not look melted; we figured that the material became brittle from heat from the sun (KS) and perhaps from battery below it. The plastic apparently was not designed properly for sun and heat (at least the batch for our cars). I'd be curious what you learn about replacing it (if it can be done and the cost).

Hi- No, it doesn't look melted - thet's just what the people I bought the car from said (but English is not their first language). It looks as you descirbe - cracked with peices missing. The people I bought the car from gave me a replacement piece (I have also heard it called a rear parcel shelf) but did not install it. I don't know how much it cost. you might be able to get one at a junk yard. Anyway, I took it to Honda yesterday and they wanted $300 to install it!! Today I took it to Best Buy - GeekSquad and they are going to install it for $50! I hope this helps.
