when i turn on the a/c the compressor starts an you can hear it running, but the air never gets cold, it seems like it tries a little. but it never comes out cold. it just blows hot air, do i just need freon? or could there be another problem?

Take it to a qualified mechanic to check it over, probably just needs to be evacuated and recharged. Professionals should handle A/C, it is not something for a home mechanic. If the compressor is engaging then most likely it's just a low refrigerant charge.
